Bilateral Comparison on Polarization Mode Dispersion between KRISS and NIST

چکیده
Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is one of the major parameters used to characterize optical fiber and fiber optic components. It has to be accurately measured and controlled or mitigated to ensure optical signal transmission with modulation rates of more than 10 Gbps for conventional single mode fiber [1]. Demand for PMD references has been gradually increasing as the instruments of PMD measurement have been widely supplied to manufacturers of fiber optic cable and components and research laboratories in order to enhance reliability of measurement results. KRISS has been establishing a PMD measurement standard as a national metrology institute (NMI) in Korea to meet this demand [2]. However, it is generally hard to verify whether our PMD value is correct until we directly compare it with other NMIs. Therefore, we coordinated a bilateral comparison on PMD between KRISS and NIST, who pioneered to establish PMD measurement standards [3].

Bilateral Comparison of Buoyancy Artefacts between Ptb and Kriss
Buoyancy artefacts (BAs) are used for the experimental determination of air density. The artefacts used for this comparison were manufactured at the PTB and the KRISS respectively and consist of one hollow cylinder and one bobbin. Mass differences of the PTB and the KRISS BAs in vacuum and in air are measured simultaneously by using the PTB prototype mass comparator. Results of the bilateral co...
متن کاملOptical-Fiber Power Meter Comparison between NIST and KRISS*
We describe the results of a comparison of reference standards between the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST-USA) and Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS-R.O. Korea) for optical fiber-based power measurements at wavelengths of 1302 nm and 1546 nm. We compare the laboratories' reference standards by means of a temperature-controlled optical trap detector. ...

Certain commercial equipment, instruments, or materials are identified in this paper in order to specify the experimental procedure adequately. Such identification is not intended to imply recommendation or endorsement by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, nor is it intended to imply that the materials or equipment identified are necessarily the best available for the purpose. ...
متن کاملComparison of Polarization Mode Dispersion Emulators
We analyze polarization mode dispersion (PMD) emulators comprised of a small number of sections of polarizationmaintaining fibers with polarization scattering at the beginning of each section. Unlike previously studied devices, these emulators allow the emulation of a whole ensemble of fibers. We derive analytical expressions and determine two main criteria that characterize the quality of PMD ...
متن کاملTolerance of Fiber-Optic Systems to CD and PMD
We theoretically compare the tolerance to chromatic dispersion and polarization mode dispersion of various modulation formats, electronic processing techniques, and optical equalizers. The comparison is given in terms of a target system outage probability.
